Potential New Member Recruitment Rules

1. Silence shall begin the day formal recruitment begins and ends at the time potential members receive their invitations to membership. Silence is defined as no communication (written or oral) between anyone other than fellow potential members, residence hall directors/housing staff, recruitment counselors, and Panhellenic Advisor.



A. Potential members can have casual contact with males during the day only.
B. Potential members cannot leave the campus of DSU at any time unless approved by Panhellenic Council or the Panhellenic Advisor.
C. After arriving on campus, potential members are prohibited from contacting sorority members, and/or alumnae. Sorority members are allowed to talk to potential members during the recruitment parties only.
D. Potential members will be allowed to use personal cell phones at scheduled times.
E. Potential members will be allowed to attend university required activities, such as dance/band and athletic related practices during recruitment week, remembering that all conversation concerning recruitment will not be allowed.


2. Potential members needing more information than this booklet provides should call the Panhellenic Advisor at (662) 846-4138 or visit the DSU Panhellenic website at dsupanhellenic.wix.com.


3. Potential members wishing to find out more about sororities during recruitment week shall be referred to the handbook, a recruitment counselor, or the Panhellenic Advisor, except while attending a recruitment party.


4. All Potential members will be required to stay in an assigned DSU residence hall during recruitment. All potential members will be assigned to the same residence hall. All potential members not assigned to their fall room assignments during recruitment will be allowed to check in and visit their fall room assignments during scheduled “free time.” Potential members who have their fall room assignments in the recruitment residence hall will be living in their fall rooms during Recruitment. Potential members who have another fall room assignment or live off campus will be given a temporary room in the recruitment residence hall.


5. All Potential members will be allowed to leave campus for meals. During “free time” the potential member
is allowed to leave campus for w
hatever needs she has with the exclusion of visiting homes, sorority members, alumnae, or males. This includes apartments in the Cleveland area.


6. Potential members will wear their name tags at all times - even when leaving the residence hall for any reason.


7. Drinking alcoholic beverages will not be permitted during recruitment on or off the DSU campus at any time.


8. From the first day of the potential member’s arrival until after formal invitations to membership are accepted, contact between sorority women and potential members shall be as follows:

  1. A. No phone calls between sorority women and potential members can be made - This rule applies to potential members AND sorority members. Take this rule seriously!

B. No dates may be arranged for potential members by sorority women.
C. No mention of sorority shall be made and any conversation shall be brief (with the exception of recruitment parties).
D. No prearranged meetings.
E. No letters or notes will be sent including via email, any technological means, or the postal service.


9. No individual party favors will be given or accepted during recruitment week.


10. No sorority member, new member, or alumna, or independent woman may be present while potential members are accepting invitations or during the Preference Card signing with the exception of the Panhellenic Advisor. There will be no discussion among the potential members during Preference card signing.


11. The Panhellenic Council shall not be held responsible for injuries, thefts or losses of or damage to personal property occurring during recruitment.


12. Potential members will not be allowed to receive any mail or gifts of any kind f
rom anyone beginning with recruitment registration and ending with formal bid acceptance. Please tell parents, boyfriends, and other friends.


13. Potential members will be able to attend only sorority sponsored activities on Bid Day until formal recruitment ends on Thursday at 8:00 a.m.


14. Potential members will be required to walk to parties unless physically unable to do so. If unable to walk, a potential member will be transported by a recruitment counselor.


15. A potential member’s participation in recruitment will automatically end if a recruitment rule is disobeyed.
